Cooking Oils

Sunflower Oil

सूर्यफूल तेल

Pressed from black sunflower seed and left unrefined, so it keeps the pale gold colour and faint nuttiness that refining removes. The lightest everyday oil in the range.

Harvest
February – April

Grown on dryland plots that follow the rabi rains.

Sunflower is the oil most Indian kitchens buy refined, in a plastic jar, stripped of everything. Pressed cold it is a different thing entirely: pale gold rather than water-clear, with a faint seed sweetness behind it.

The seed is hulled and pressed slowly. Because it is high in polyunsaturated fat it is also the most light-sensitive oil we make, so it goes straight into the bottle and should live in a cupboard rather than beside the stove.

Nothing is bleached, nothing is deodorised, and no antioxidant is added.

What the slow press keeps
  • High in Vitamin E

Sunflower is one of the richest natural sources, and cold pressing keeps it.

  • Light on the plate

Thin viscosity means less oil clings to fried food.

  • Neutral enough to disappear

Lets delicate ingredients — fish, gourds, steamed preparations — taste of themselves.

  • Unrefined, unlike almost all sunflower oil

Nearly every sunflower oil on an Indian shelf is refined. This one is not.

What is inside

  • 100% cold pressed sunflower oil

That is the whole list. No antioxidant, no anti-foaming agent, no added vitamin, no flavouring, no colour.

How to use it

  • Everyday cooking

Sautéing, shallow frying and everyday sabzi where you want a light oil.

  • Baking

Neutral enough for cakes and batters without carrying its own flavour in.

  • Salads & dressings

Takes lemon, mustard and herbs without arguing with them.

  • Storage

Polyunsaturated oils dislike light. Keep it in the cupboard, not on the counter.
